The Teacher Academy admits exceptional students who meet the following criteria:
High overall high school average;
High grades in mathematics and science courses;
High Regents scores in mathematics and science subjects;
High SAT or ACT scores;
Strong recommendations from at least one math or science teacher;
Demonstrated interest in teaching;
U.S. citizenship or legal residency in New York or New Jersey.
Teacher Academy Benefits
Four-year scholarship covering all tuition and fees;
Stipends for internships in host schools during the school year;
A full-time teaching position within the New York City Department of Education upon successful completion of The Teacher Academy program including course work, fieldwork, and pre-employment screening.
Commitment
In order to retain The Teacher Academy scholarship, at the end of the first year study, students commit to working in a high need New York City public school for at least two years after graduation. The New York City Department of Education commits that each new teacher placed in a New York City school will receive one-on-one mentoring to ensure success in the classroom. Teacher Academy students will develop and maintain a network of fellow graduates and master teachers for ongoing collaboration while on the job.
