Dr. Lorraine Whitman, Director of The Teacher Academy at The City College received her doctorate in physics from New York University. During her two decades in research, she was a pioneer developer of computer animation techniques for engineering analysis. As director of the Salvadori Center, she developed project based mathematics and science curriculum and established professional development programs for middle and high school teachers.

Professor Issa Salame received his doctorate in chemistry from the CUNY Graduate School and University Center. His research interests include understanding how students learn chemistry through various inquiry-based methods. Professor Salame is passionate about teaching. He believes it is his job to reach every student while making chemistry concepts comprehensible and meaningful.

Professor Richard Steinberg |

Professor Richard Steinberg did his Ph.D. in experimental solid state physics at Yale University and post-doctoral work in physics education research. His interests include evaluating the effectiveness of technological teaching tools and development of a research-based curriculum in modern physics / quantum mechanics. His work is frequently funded by the National Science Foundation which is currently funding CLUSTER, a collaboration with the New York Hall of Science. He is a member of the Secondary Education and the Physics Departments and Program Head for Science Education.

Professor Federica Raia is a volcanologist who received her doctorate at the University of Naples, Italy. Her research includes liquid inclusions in Vesuvian lavas and methods for improving earth system science education. She is a Research Associate at the American Museum of Natural History.

Mr. Martin Rosenman, College Liaison and Seminar Facilitator received his master degrees in science education and environmental science education from The City College of New York. He taught secondary school science in NYC schools for more than three decades, served as Science Department Coordinator, Dean of Students Coordinator, participated in curriculum writing projects and was a NYC DOE Science Mentor for New York City Teaching Fellows. He has also facilitated professional development workshops and recently served on the New York Science Advisory Board for Glencoe Science: The Living Environment, 2007 ed.

Professor Despina Stylianou |

Professor Despina Stylianou is did her doctoral work at University of Pittsburgh in Mathematics Education and holds an appointment in Secondary Education. She is an active researcher in to the way students understand and do mathematics. She received a National Science Foundation Early Careeer grant which supports the Urban Math Project, a five-year research and development project. Prof. Stylianou’s main goal is to understand the development of mathematical thinking of middle school students in urban schools and to identify conditions that influence that development.

Professor Beverly Smith is Program Head of Secondary Mathematics Education at CCNY. She holds a Columbia doctorate in Mathematics Education. She does extensive collaborative work with New York City Teachers and their classrooms. Her research interests are student and teacher beliefs about mathematics and the teaching and learning of mathematics.
